Seminars – Jacques Lacan – Versions J.L. et non J.L.

The École’s library makes all of Jacques Lacan’s seminars available to the Internet public, in the basic form of available stenotypes. A stenotypist assisted Jacques Lacan in each of his seminar sessions, from 1953 to 1980. At the end of each session, she typed up the stenotype tapes, in duplicate or triplicate, using carbon paper.

For most of the seventies, J.L. versions were supplemented by other versions which, whatever their merits, were not of the same quality. While they sometimes ammend errors, they might add other, new errors, of their own, which are all the more difficult to perceive given that, unlike J.L. versions, their texts often have a typographical quality that is not matched by an equal critical effort.
